Trying to make art-deco style Spock & Uhura for a Ship Wars requesting-person.
I cannot figure out what color for U's dress. Would it be weird to just ask the random requesting-person, whom I don't actually know, for an opinion on a WIP?
Meanwhile I'll ask you people. Thing looks like this:

Red?

Gold?

Some light color?

In related news:
1. Zoe Saldana has my sister's nose!
2. And now this Uhura has my other sister's hairstyle.
3. I'm a little disturbed. HI MY SISTERS.

I think of these three options the red works best. If you wanted to try something different in red, you could push it toward red-violet, maybe? I also really love Zoe in any kind of purples--deep blue violet or violet looks beautiful on her. Greens in the jade family are classically art deco colors, but I don't think those would work as well with Spock's coloring.
I hate to make vague suggestions so I dug up this little tool and made some color palettes! Um, because I get a little too excited about color, ahem. These are mostly to illustrate what colors I mean and ALSO because LOOK AT THIS NEAT TOOL, IT IS SO FUN!
palette with red-violets
palette made from actual violets
another species of violet
(I love degraeve.com. So much nerd fun in one site, eee.)

Date: 2010-04-02 05:05 pm (UTC)Full disclosure: I always wait for your comments on art-beta posts because I KNOW you have color- and design-sense. Is that creepy? I'm not trying to be, honestly.
Also DUDE that is a neat tool.

Date: 2010-04-03 04:02 pm (UTC)I think...I actually have this phobia of being one of those people who have TOO MANY OPINIONS (and INDUCE EYEROLLING IN OTHERS) so that's actually very comforting. :Dno subject

Yeah. Anyway! I think this looks amazing--I love the shape of the dress, too, going over her shoulders. Gorgeous! For the wrap, I wonder, maybe a neutral color, like ivory? It depends on the background, too. If you're doing a color or dark background ivory or white would stand out well. If you're doing a light background, maybe...hmm. What goes with purple? I always match it with either black or off-white. Would black look too much like an extension of Spock's suit? A wheat or yellow color would be a nice contrast to the purple but I think it might pick up his skin tone too much. Green or orange would create vibrancy? She might look like she dressed in the dark, though. ^_^
(If you were doing this in total 1930's mobster/Vulcan-Sex-Club-Priorietor style, I'd suggest giving her a white fox fur stole, but IDK (a) how hard it is to render fur and (b) if that would constitute supporting the fur industry. Tricky!)

:D The cone-boobs make me laugh.
Hm, there is this one
with some fur...but I don't have anything made out of fur that I could use for reference. I'll go try ivory or green.
